Art group. Research base. St. Petersburg, Russia
North-7 - group of artists emerged from the experimental research base founded in 2013 by the group of friends-graduates from St.Petersburg State Secondary Art School and ProArte Foundation School for Young Artists. The artists investigate national context with no regard to already existing institutional dictates or intellectual trends. North-7 is far self-reliant artistic organism, extracting strong energy from the process of inner relations between community participants. Group participants experiment with different artistic languages and forms while performative practices remain the main activity for the group as they represent essential form of collective involvement in living artistic experience.

Group members: Alexandr Tsikarishvili, Nestor Engelke, Petr Dyakov, Leonid Tskhe, Anna Andrzhievskaia, Nestor Kharchenko, Oleg Khmelev, Liza Tsikarishvili, Sasha Zubritskaya and friends.

Lost & Found North-7 Expedition
The artist collective North-7 started in 2013 as an independent 'research base'. It is an artist-run space, founded by several friends and schoolmate in a basement in the centre of Saint Petersburg. These past seven years, the group has migrated across the city, changing its locations and initiating different long-term artistic projects, which have involved participants from the local community. As a collective, North-7 does not have strict borders. It remains open to collaborations and cannot be defined. As such North-7 can be considered a research base / art group / collective / partnership / family of artists.

Performances play a crucial part in the artistic practice of North-7. However, they also experiment with different art forms in varying media. The artists examine themes such as identity and politics, without conforming to existing rules or intellectual trends.

North-7 also works with a concept of 'locality', not as immersion into local mythology, but as an estrangement from the 'local state of mind' with its provinciality and generality, while using fears and obsessive images, introversion and inner potential to redefine itself. As a form North-7's practices are rooted in absurdist poetry with images that grow from an 'architecture of words', self-destructing structures of 'floundering signs'. The artists often rely on buffoonery as a concept in their performances and other art forms, much like a 'bad joke' which reflects a situation where social 'reality' (or rather social phantasm) beats any irony, any imagined witticism.

Lost & Found North-7 Expedition is a non-existent museum in the form of a classical ruin, such as a temple or a theatre. The installation was created for M HKA and holds documentation on and an archive of all past artistic projects and activities carried out by North-7. The installation takes the form of an archaeological dig and resembles an outdated provincial museum, which presents an eclectic range of artefacts in a non-linear, often symbolic manner.

North-7 is currently made up of Alexandr Tsikarishvili, Nestor Engelke, Petr Dyakov, Leonid Tskhe, Anna Andrzhievskaia, Nestor Kharchenko, Oleg Khmelev, Liza Tsikarishvili, Sasha Zubritskaya and friends.

Seventh
"7th Independent Contemporary Art Fair. "Saint Dogvilleburg"
Anniversary seventh "7th Independent Contemporary Art Fair" was held at Sevcabel Port public space on Kogevennaya Line. More than one hundred St.Petersburg artists took part in the fair. "7th Independent Fair" ritually offer an alternative to a conventional dried-up commercial gallery format in the form of direct live communication with audience. This time the fair as an art project was organized in the form of carnival "Saint Dogvilleburg": participating artists created architectural installations, during all time of the fair's work live performances, dj-sets, self-organized dancefloors and other art projects oriented on direct participation of the visitors took place.

Project of "7th Independent Contemporary Art Fair" emerged as an independent horizontal initiative by the artists from "Noth-7" art group tend to create such series of events together with wide circle of associates from the local contemporary art community. The project became a successful experiment in removal of intermediary between artist and wide audience. As a part of it, St. Petersburg citizens received an ability to have live immediate communication with representatives of "contemporary art sphere" with no intellectual barriers created artificially by the institutional system of galleries and museums. The fair became a platform where contemporary artists can communicate directly with the audience by means of experimental spectacular and participatory forms. Self-organized fair has no constant place – it is migrating in urban space. Every time at the fair artists show their works for sale at democratic prices using the form of live communication and they consider wide groups of citizens to be their public rather than professionals.

SADPPS-7
North-7 School of Active Drawing and Performative Posing
The Saint Petersburg art group North-7 presents The School of Active Drawing and Performative Posing (SADPP-7). The concept of "the school" is only used for convenience as the project is focused on the critical analysis of this term and the revelation of the causes of its miraculous vitality in the conditions of Saint Petersburg art environment. As an art research project SADDP-7 began a few years ago with performative practices of North-7 aimed at the deconstruction of academic teaching system. As part of the project, non-classical manners of drawing and relations between "posing model" and "artist" began to develop.

Some of the project's participants have an academia background and, paradoxically, teach at the Russian Academy of Arts. However, they are not satisfied with the out-of-date model of classical drawing, its complete lack of freedom and of ways for development. The artists raise the following questions: what for? (to draw), why? (does one have to draw or does one have to draw in a certain way?) and how? (is it possible to draw and not to draw). The School of Active Drawing and Performative Posing is not an institution or a curriculum but a method of creating specific conditions-situations through which one can exit the utilitarian schooling rules. As a result, a vast diversity of techniques has developed: axe-drawing, poker drawing, soil drawing, drawing with human bodies, mechanical drawing (by creating special machines for that purpose), etc. Moreover, the specific topics-situations for the performative productions have emerged: living sculpture, model in an environment, mimicry of a model in the urban environment. Even though the term school is treated with criticism the project's participants regard themselves intrinsically connected to the heritage of the Leningrad school of graphic arts and in their work they are analysing their "rootedness" in the local art context.

The School of Active Drawing and Performative Posing unites the majority of Saint Petersburg artists who practice various methods of "immediate drawing" that include the analysis of its place in contemporary art. Summarizing the results found by SADPP, this exhibition presents works by its main participants: Anna Andrzhievskaya, Piotr Diakov, Nestor Engelke, Nestor Kharchenko, Fiodor Khirosige, Petr Shvetsov Leonid Tskhe, Alexander Tsikarishvili, Sasha Zubritskaya and others. Alexander Tsikarishvili has also acted as a curator.

The exhibition will show the audience different ways of overcoming the limits planar drawing. The exposition has been turned into an environment for performative installations, a living sculpture, costumes referring to the process of transition from a model into a performer, documentations of The School's performances and a samizdat magazine.

North-7 School of Active Drawing and Performative Posing
2016-2018
North-7 School of Active Drawing and Performative Posing
Group of artists founded school of performative posing and active drawing several years ago not as a studying technique but as a form of new cooperation and communication between artists appeared as practice of active drawing in different conditions and situations. Ideas of the school are based on performative practices of North-7 art group as well as extreme nonacademic methods of sketches after posing model. The word "school" here is taken in multiple quotes as active drawing and performative posing, it is not an institution, a technique or a programme, but a method of creation a unique situation. This method involves searching for different forms of author's drawing (for example, axe-drawing (drawing with an axe), scorcher-drawing, drawing with soil, as well as mechanical drawing, creation of mechanical techniques, machinery for drawing). During the emergence of school several mainline theme-situations for performative setting were developed: "model as living sculpture", "model blend in urban space" and others...
North-7 "Active Drawing And Performative Posing" Manifesto:

1) There is no bad drawing, no good drawing, there is only different drawing.

2) When an artist draws he does not think.

3) Drawing in front of the other causes unconditioned reflex. When one artist draws in front of the other he has reflective reaction: saliva is discharged and he has strong desire to draw as well.

4) Drawing is not a skill, it is passion, desire or tension.

5) Performative posing is brother of interesting drawing.

6) Waste of interesting drawing is not interesting posing.

7) Drawing must have psychotherapeutic effect: an artist is concentrated and distracted of annoying thoughts while drawing, then meditative process of "nonthinking" and drawing takes place. Go to point 2.

7.1) When performer is posing for the artist he submerges himself into the role, he becomes ActRisa. Particularly here active drawing takes place, due to performative posing.

7.2) Active drawing and performative posing is collective process, creating field for collaboration and exchange between artists.

7.3) Active drawing is not an educative programme but spontaneously developing project where each artist is self-sufficient, active and is a full participating part of performance.

7.4) Active drawing is drawing in uncomfortable living situations with uncomfortable methods using unsuitable equipment.

7.5) Active drawing has no method and that is why it can't be learned. Any new session drawer-performer starts from scratch.

7.6) Real deep involvement in active drawing is method of working with school traumas, forced archetypes such as "correct", "must", "essential".

7.7) Never take pencil into your mouth while drawing. But if you did then draw like that, with your mouth…

Project by North-7 art group for Barents Spektakel-2017 festival in Norway.
"Flying Bar" was an extension of experiments with open artist-run space held in "НОЖ" Bar created by the group in St.Petersburg.
Flying Bar North-7 is an artistic project at the now abandoned Seamen´s club. The club once served as a meeting place for tired Russian seaman but now is the meeting place of festival guests drawn into the abyss of constant artistic arrangements. Guided by a mermaid, visitors will be bewitched by conceptual performances accompanied by multi-language field recordings and ambient smoke; all which bring back the warmth of life to this nostalgic place amongst a seascape.
